Preparing for the Next Century — My Personal Perspective
As the world is moving into the 21st century, people have been obsessed with trying to understand what the future of our planet may look like in the next century. Despite all the scientific development we have achieved, I still believe minkind will confront a series of challenges.
First of all, the problem of a rising world population should attract our attention. The population on the earth is rapidly increasing while food and other commodities can’t keep pace with these increases. In the coming century, the most important thing we should deal with is that mankind should always keep in mind that we can’t go on expanding human population without plan and we must take urgent measures to get it under control.
The second problem we are facing in the 21st century is preserving the environment.Environment means the land, water and atmosphere we live by. We must realize that we have only one earth. We must take immediate measures to fight against all kinds of pollution. Preserving the environment is preserving not only our home but also civilization of thehuman community.
In the 21stcentury , it can be anticipated that knowledge and information will expand at a high rate. The industrial era of mankind will be over and a new world, a new social order,a new system will be emerging on the world. When the 21st century arrives, knowledge and information will replace old industrial commodities production. An era of information will come into being. In the future, human society will be characterized by processes in which telecommunications and computers are strategic. If modern society was characterized by a focus on more effective use of mechanical labour, then in the 21st century, postmodern society will be characterized by increasing reliance on technology, information and computers. We have solid evidence to support this.
In the US, almost half the work force was engaged in information production and contribution as early as 1962. By 1990, the figure had grown to an astounding 75 percent. This development has profound implications for the entire world. To catch up with the advanced countries, the youth of china should learn the new knowledge and information. In the 21st century, economic competition will be moreintense and cruel. In this battle new knowledge and skills are of the utmost importance. They are our competitive power in the future.
I believe in the 21st century, there will be both challenge and opportunity. Let’s meet the new century with all the courage and confidence in our hearts.
